Mission Statement:
BOOKS FOR PEACE is designed to be a non-profit, educational organization working with schools, other institutions and community groups in Central America to provide reading
programs and books for children.

Basic philosophy:
The BOOKS FOR PEACE programs are based on the belief that books provide the opportunity for children to experience the world and develop a lifelong journey of reading for personal pleasure, growth, and information. The children’s greater educational potential will help contribute to improving their lives and to the overall economic and political development of their countries.

The benefits of the literacy program achieved are twofold:

1. To quote one teacher, “These books you bring are a revolution. My students come from families where a third of the parents only have a second or third grade education, a third can only write their names for legal purposes and the other third can’t read or write at all. These children are reading 10, 20 up to 60 books and taking them home to read to their families.”

2. The other benefit is to the delegates themselves that travel to El Salvador. Our delegations generally include both youth and adults. Traveling to Central America and living among these people for 7-10 days is always a life altering experience. The delegates internalize thoughts, feelings, and information about life, lifestyles, and poorer countries that will stay with them and affect their perspective of life forever.
