Founded:
In Blue Springs, Mo in
1999 by Ellen Trakas, a North American
educator.
Mission Statement:
BOOKS FOR PEACE is designed to be a non-profit, educational
organization working with schools, other institutions and
community groups in Central America to provide reading
programs and books for children. Basic philosophy:
The BOOKS FOR PEACE programs are based on the belief that
books provide the opportunity for children to experience the
world and develop a lifelong journey of reading for personal
pleasure, growth, and information. The children’s greater
educational potential will help contribute to improving their lives
and to the overall economic and political development of their
countries. Basic Programs:
Classroom Library Program/Community Program: “Reading
Corners”/Public Libraries Program. Anticipated Activity:
Initial activity is to acquire reading materials and
supplies, and to
ship or take these materials to communities and schools in Central
America. Efforts will begin in El Salvador. The organization,
CIS -Centro de Intercambio y Solidaridad-will serve as the local representative
for the program in El Salvador.
Also there will be development of brochures and materials
explaining the work of “BOOKS FOR PEACE” to help in
soliciting donations. Programs will then be implemented specific
to community and school needs.
